What to do with Rupert?

Post by Florence24 on Fri Jul 08, 2011 2:31 am

OK, so the vets want him on a specific hypoallergenic food either home cooking or one of the Royal Canin/Hills ones.

I put Rupert on raw food in May and he has been doing really well. Then he got this rash about 3-4 weeks ago out of the blue. Always been suspected he had an allergy of some sort, he has those tummy issues like bloat but he recovers as well (which have stopped since giving this fibre from the vets).

Anyway, I worry that commercial food is processed in a way which causes Rupert to have a problem with it. In that I tried messing about with it and his skin problems have never been triggered by a change in food or anything environmental that I have been able to find, so I believe maybe its just something about how they make the food that didn't suit his digestive system.

I could put him on white fish and potato home cooked food for six weeks. Its not a balanced meal, but the vet says for a couple months would be OK. My dilemma is, I don't think 6 weeks (as he is just coming off steroids) would be a long enough amount of time for his skin to develop a problem like a rash. Hope that makes sense.

Other option is use this commercial stuff which I do not like the thought of and I would want him back on raw asap anyway, but it might shut the vet up and I could keep him on that longer than I could on white fish and potato...

He could literally eat nothing else whatsoever, just that food.

So home cooking, the commercial food or neither bugger it and keep him on raw?

If the commercial one, wet or dry food? Dry I could use as treats out on walks, not sure what I'd do with wet etc. The way I am with it I half wonder if I'll even stick to it and still give him carrot etc anyway when I shouldn't but its nearly unmanageable otherwise Crying or Very sad

Help? Embarassed

Personally I'd go for the fish and potato, as you literally know exactly whats in it, It should be balanced enough, Dogs are essentially carnivores anyway...

I hope the poor guy gets better! Smile

He's not allowed anything like that short term HM, he's going to have to eat it for months at a time so it would need to be more balanced I think Crying or Very sad

Think I am going to bugger it and carry on with raw because he was fine on that for 6 weeks which is what they say is long enough to show a reaction, so there is a high chance its something else...

I will cut out his Pro Fibre but first time he has an episode I'm putting him back on it full time I think.
